Top 10 Solar PV Roof Projects Italy
Monday, October 3, 2011 at 09:57AM The 5 Megawatt project on the roof of the Fiere di Parma, is currently the largest solar PV roof project in Italy. It is one of Solarplaza's top-10 list of Italian PV roof projects of 1 Megawatt or more built in the last 4 years. Due to the changes under the recent Fourth Conto Energia, it is expected that more big roof projects will be built in the near future. Under Conto Energia 1-3, the development of large scale projects on the ground exploded, leading Italy to become possibly the world's biggest PV market in 2011. Currently, Italy's largest solar PV project is the ground based 84 megawatt Montalto di Castro project.
Italy is following a trend which is visible elsewhere in Europe where commercial and residential roof projects are gaining market share over ground based projects. Other countries showing the same shift are Spain, France and the United Kingdom. Decreasing feed-in tariffs are an important reason for this transition. Governments are trying to preferentially stimulate roof integration and application, rather than the large scale ground projects which are consuming big portions of the budgets. In Italy it is expected that companies will start hunting for the best and largest roofs still available (following Belgium’s model, a market with many large roof applications). Investors and developers offer roof owners a good premium for the use of their roof for solar energy production.
Except for one project (the roof of the Rome Trade Fair), all large roof projects in Italy are using crystalline silicon solar module technology. Although the alternative thin-film technology is cheaper, prices of crystalline modules have come down substantially this year due to oversupply in the market. Crystalline modules produce more energy per square meter than equivalent thin-film technologies. The price difference between both technologies has narrowed. Clearly, investors want to produce as much energy as possible once a roof is suitable, although in some specific cases thin-film technology remains preferable (for instance, if the existing roof is not able to carry much more weight).
The shifting trend from ground to roof, the hunt for good roofs and the new related business models are examined at the conference The Solar Future Italy on 6 October 2011 in Milano.
